Minor update, but important
Published on April 2, 2009 By GunslingerBara In Forum Issues

The forums have been updated again today with a minor change.  If a user edits his/her post, there will now be a "View Edits" button.  Clicking this button will show a history of that reply/post, along with highlights (red = removed text, green = added text).

If you do not see the button or clicking the button does nothing, please do a "hard refresh" by holding Ctrl and pressing F5.  This will clear your cache and force a download of the new image and javascript file.

Hopefully this will reduce the amount of griefers who go back and edit all of their posts.

Now where's my cookie?

BTW it seems that if someone forces their text to be a certain color, the red/green won't work.  Check any of Gm00nii's posts on this page:

It looks like smileys don't show up in the view edits and are just translated to their text codes (I took MottiKhan's bait )

But that's also a minor thinger.

You mean I actually have to pay attention to what I type now?
Only if you wish to prevent future embarassment, so please don't pay attention!

Yes, edited posts do not run through the same process as regular posts.  I'm going to leave it like this for now, as making it translate smileys, quotes, etc. would likely take up too much resources for what it's worth.  If I get enough complaints I'll change it though.

Farking nice, even old posts hold this, so it's not just from today and on.

~skips off to see comments recended by others~

Yes, old posts also have the edited data (except for posts edited by moderators or above).  Also, older edits do not have breaks in them, so they'll look all scrunched up.

Hmm... I'll have to figure out how to handle that... maybe give it a background instead of just changing the text color.

I didn't post it as a complaint, just an observation Blame the beta tester in me.

Zubaz

It's going to be awesome just to see everyone's typos. Cook. What typos?

Zu doesn't know the meaning of the word 'typos', or the meaning of the word 'meaning'.

Yeah, but that's only because he never posts without a dictionary beside the keyboard. And that's why he types at a whopping 2 WPM.

At that same post though is a forced background color.  I edited my Reply #14 in this thread to have text color as well as background color changes, so you don't need to visit that gc2 thread.

I really don't know what to tell you though...and it would have to be some sort of formatting that we cannot already do.  Perhaps too much of an issue to deal with a minority that posts in colors.

~sighs~ Damned typos.  When do you think Firefox's spellcheck will work in posts again?

I've been working *up* to two words per minute for the last three years and now you mock me?

ZubaZ is going to end up spending more time editing than posting!

More entertainment for us.

I think I just heard Zubaz lobby for the spell check.

Oh yeah, I haven't gotten this in yet.  Good job Bara!

*edit, Bara beat me to it in the following reply before I could get this edit up*

GOT IT!  Perhaps forcing the post to the colors that are default for the forum JUST inside that edit box.  That way you could still do the red/green.  That doesn't screw with the original post does it?

Actually, I decided I'll just get rid of all formatting from the edits, so it's just plain text.  I'll add the smileys, links, and quote formatting, but that's about it.  That should resolve the problem and make edits easier to manage and read.

By the way, if you guys notice any of the forums with color/image issues related to this, please be sure to let me know!  I know some of the forums have darker backgrounds and icons, so I used a different icon and style for those.

This is a much needed improvement to the forums. It may even promote thinking before hitting the "Post Reply" button.(But I wouldn't be willing to bet any money on that happening)

A perfectly cromulent idea. Well done, good sirs.
